Dental Crowns

Chewing and speaking can be challenging with decayed, broken and missing teeth.

Dr. Todd Fincher DDS provides custom dental crowns to Greenwood and Columbus, MS and all of Mississippi. Dental crowns are a tooth shaped cap that can repair or replace missing teeth.

Why should I choose a dental crown?

Restore Oral Health with Dental Crowns

A dental crown can preserve a natural tooth by placing a protective, tooth-like “cap” over the remaining tooth structure. Following your treatment for dental decay or trauma, Dr. Todd Fincher can place a custom dental crown at his Greenwood, MS, dental practice. In certain cases, he may even be able to place it for you in a single appointment.

Serving Oxford, MS, Greenville, MS, and Columbus, MS, Dr. Fincher uses advanced in-office technology to plan and perform all of his dental procedures. For patients who have anxiety about dental treatment, he also provides Propofol IV sedation to help you relax.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns address a wide range of dental problems. One of their more common uses is as a treatment to preserve natural tooth structure following treatment for trauma or decay. A dental crown may also be placed following root canal therapy. In both cases, the custom-made cap protects your natural tooth from further damage and prevents the need for a tooth extraction.

Dr. Fincher may recommend a dental crown for patients who:

  • Have a severely chipped tooth
  • Have a cracked tooth
  • Recently underwent a restorative treatment that left underlying dentin tissue exposed
  • Are having a dental bridge placed

Candidates for a dental crown should have enough natural tooth structure remaining to support the prosthetic. If you do not or if your tooth requires extraction, our office offers advanced dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

There are many benefits to using dental crowns. As a restorative option, crowns:

  • Strengthen teeth
  • Protect weak teeth
  • Prevent further tooth damage following treatment for decay
  • Provide natural-looking results

Although many people think of dental crowns as restorative in nature, they can provide drastic cosmetic results, as well. If you have a malformed tooth or a tooth that is severely discolored, a dental crown can cover it up and significantly improve the aesthetics of your smile. When properly maintained, a dental crown can last for several years or longer.

Smiles for Life combines patient-centered care with cutting-edge technology. Dr. Todd Fincher and his staff feel called to take care of every patient’s physical, spiritual, and dental needs. We consider ourselves one of the most technologically advanced family dentistry practices in the Mississippi Delta.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Dental crowns require two convenient visits to our Greenwood dental practice. During your first visit, your tooth will be prepared to receive the crown. This requires the removal of part of your tooth’s natural structure. First, Dr. Fincher will use local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. Our office also offers sedation dentistry for patients who are nervous or anxious about dental treatments. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Fincher will gently remove the outer layer of enamel. Then, an impression of your tooth will be taken and you will be given a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the final restoration is ready.

Prepping a tooth for a crown

The impression of your tooth will be sent to a trusted laboratory that will manufacture your crown. Dr. Fincher will take care to ensure that the custom crown matches your natural teeth, both in terms of shape, color, and luster.

When the crown arrives back at our office, a second and final appointment will be scheduled. During this visit, Dr. Fincher will ensure that the dental crown is a perfect fit and that it does not interfere with your bite. Once he is fully satisfied, a strong bonding cement will be used to attach the crown. In certain cases, he may recommend a same-day crown so that you can walk out with your permanent restoration in a single appointment.

Most patients fully adapt to their new prosthetic after a few days. With proper oral hygiene habits and twice-a-year visits to our dental practice, you can enjoy your new dental crown for several years or longer.
