Tooth loss can cause your jaw to shrink and weaken, and limit your restoration choices. It will also have effects on your appearance.

What is bone grafting?

Dental bone grafting is an oral surgery procedure where a graft is positioned to add density and volume to a location on the jawbone where there is bone loss. When you lose a tooth, bone loss is usually a byproduct unfortunately. A graft can come from a tissue bank or your own body. It acts as a scaffold that allows your own bone to tissue to regenerate and grow. This will fill the gap in your jawbone.

Dr. Fincher is the first practitioner in Mississippi to complete a successful synthetic block bone graft.

Block Bone Grafting Explained

With block bone grafting almost everyone is not a candidate for dental implants. Dr. Fincher is one of three dental practices that offer this in the state of Mississippi.

So let’s expand a little bit on this block bone graft principle because it is extremely cutting edge. We’re one of only three practices in the state of Mississippi currently qualified to place these block grafts. The beautiful thing about this technology is I can take someone who is not a candidate for dental implants, who is in dentures or partial dentures and is essentially a denture or a partial denture. denture cripple as far as what they can and can do eating wise and we can make these people candidates for future implant placement. So now thanks to the technology with this company that’s making these block graphs we can take someone who was hopeless as far as having normal teeth and having normal biting function and we can make them a candidate to have a bone graft done put it in. implants, put in bridge work and essentially restore them to complete function. I’ll give you a few examples of how we’ve used this technology. One patient was in a car wreck. She lost all of her teeth on one side of her mouth along with most of her jawbone. We went in and took a comb beam of her, took a scan of her, sent those off and had a blocked bone. graft milled out that fit her site specifically. Actually it went from her midline all the way back to what would be her last mower. We inserted that block bone graft in, screwed it in, put in the healing factors with it, and tomorrow I’m actually going to be placing implants in her bone graft to restore her completely back to function. Another example, we used it for a long time. is in trauma also. I’ve got a young child that had a terrible four wheeler accident. We’re actually going in and bone grafting his area for future implants. So it is just it’s a phenomenal phenomenal asset to us to be able to help these people who are crippled without.

Candidates for bone grafting

Lots of patients look to bone grafts to qualify for dental implants, which are used to securely support restorations that replace missing teeth. But there are other reasons you may need bone grafting.

Dr. Todd Fincher serving all of Mississippi frequently  recommends dental bone graft surgery to coincide tooth removed. It is convenient and effective to do after removing the tooth. It also encourages the tooth socket to heal faster and keeps bone in the area more stable.

Being proactive helps prevent bone deterioration from destabilizing your other teeth. You’ll also be ready to go ahead with an implant at a later date. Bone grafting may also be recommended to help your jaw support a traditional denture or to repair areas of bone loss due to gum disease.

Bone Grafting Is very common

With 800 dental implant patients studied, half needed bone grafting

What are bone grafts made from?

Bone grafting material can be made from either a synthetic bone-like material or a bone tissue. Grafts can be a block or a particulate form, which looks like sand. Our At Todd Fincher DDS, Smiles for Life , we will determine which type of bone graft is appropriate for your procedure. When placed, the dental bone graft acts as a scaffold for your own bone tissue to develop on. Over time, the donor graft is replaced with your own natural bone. The main sources of graft material include:

  • Synthetic Material
Synthetic materials that replicate natural bone can also be used for grafting.
  • Human Bone
Human bone can come from your own body or from donor tissue that has been sterilized.
  • Animal Bone
Animal bone is another source of graft material. Like other bone, it is sterilized before use.

Sinus Lift

Dental implants placed in the upper back area of the jaw may require a sinus lift. When undergoing this procedure, grafting material is added to the sinus floor to gently lift the sinus. This technique ensures there is adequate bone in the area to support an implant once you have fully healed.

Recovery and healing

Recovery and healing can be different from one patient to another. On the average, most patients need to wait between four to nine months before dental implant surgery can be performed. Immediately following the procedure, Dr. Fincher will typically prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection. If needed, he can also provide prescription pain medication. Dr. Fincher will monitor your healing and keep you updated on when to schedule your dental implant surgery.
