Tooth Extraction
If you have teeth that are severely damaged or decayed, that cannot be salvaged through a root canal therapy or periodontal treatment, an extraction may be necessary. By extracting these teeth, we can begin the process of treating any underlying gum or bone defects and restoring your function and smile with dental implants or other restorations. Difficult tooth extractions can be performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are small, threaded titanium posts that are surgically implanted in the jaw bone to replace the roots of missing teeth. Dental implants are widely considered to be the treatment of choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants fuse directly to the jaw bone by a process known as osseointegration. In addition dental implants prevent the loss of bone which occurs when a tooth is extracted or when an extraction site has been left untreated. Implants mimic the roots of natural teeth thereby maintaining the height, width, and density of the supporting bone. Implants can also be used to support overdentures. During the first phase of dental implant surgery the threaded titanium post is placed into the jaw bone. The implant will remain in the bone and continue to heal over the following three to six months. After this process is complete the implant is uncovered and restored with a crown which looks and feels just like a natural tooth. On occasion a temporary crown can be placed immediately after implant placement. Dental implant surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation. Dr. Stanislaus also performs bone grafting for patients who require the preparatory procedure.
TMJ Disorder Surgery
While oral appliances and physical therapy are often enough to correct most cases of TMJ disorder, sometimes patients require surgical treatment. If you suffer from jaw pain, have difficulty opening your jaw, or notice pops and clicks when you open your mouth despite other options, Dr. Fincher can perform a variety of procedures to realign your jaw joint and relieve discomfort. In milder cases, the joint can be easily washed out with needles. Other patients may need a deeper level of examination and correction. Most of these procedures are performed while patients receive general anesthesia to minimize their discomfort.
